PEMAIN perseorangan lelaki negara, Liew Daren akan menggantikan Datuk Lee Chong Wei, sebagai pemain harapan Malaysia untuk merangkul pingat emas pada Sukan Komanwel di Glasgow, Scotland pada 24 Julai.

Pengurus Besar Persatuan Badminton Malaysia (BAM) Kenny Goh berkata Liew dipilih untuk menggantikan jaguh nombor satu dunia Chong Wei, yang mengalami kecederaan pangkal paha semasa beraksi pada Terbuka Indonesia bulan lepas dan menerima rawatan di Institut Sukan Negara (ISN).

"Pihak pengurusan telah mengenal pasti Daren sebagai pemain simpanan apabila senarai nama bagi acara sukan itu dikemukakan kepada Majlis Olimpik Malaysia (MOM) pada Mei.

"Pihak pengurusan, selepas membuat pertimbangan yang teliti memilih Daren untuk menggantikan Chong Wei," kata beliau dalam satu kenyataan di sini hari ini.

Kenny berkata para pemain dipilih antara lain berdasarkan pencapaian semasa kejohanan, laporan ISN, sikap pemain semasa latihan dan disiplin secara keseluruhan.

Malaysia membolot pingat emas dalam acara perseorangan lelaki pada Sukan Komanwel melalui Rashid Sidek pada 1990 dan 1994, Wong Choong Hann (1998), Hafiz Hashim (2002) dan Chong Wei (2006 dan 2010).

Jaguh badminton negara yang pertama meraih pingat emas dalam perseorangan lelaki ialah Tan Aik Huang pada 1966 diikuti oleh mendiang Datuk Punch Gunalan pada 1974. - Bernama
