Dr. Louis Ignarro won the Nobel Prize in medicine in 1998, along with Robert F. Furchgott and Ferid Murad, for his research discoveries showing the powerful ability of nitric oxide (NO) to improve cardiovascular health and prevent heart disease. His groundbreaking work—the basis for his 2005 best-selling book, NO More Heart Disease—established Dr. Ignarro as perhaps the world’s leading authority on nutritional approaches to cardiac wellness and also led to the development of Viagra.
He has spent more than 40 years as a research scientist, seeking to understand the incredible role that nitric oxide plays in fostering optimal health. One of his most important discoveries was that antioxidants, along with reducing cell damage from free radicals, increase nitric oxide levels by protecting blood vessel walls—which secrete nitric oxide—from damage.
The co-author of the Health Is Wealth series, Dr. Ignarro refined his research on nitric oxide to help people live healthy, active lives and avoid heart disease. He sits on the Herbalife Nutrition Advisory Board, which is composed of leading experts in the areas of health and nutrition. As part of his role with the organization, he also developed the formulation of the entire Herbalife cardio line.
Dr. Ignarro holds a Ph.D. in pharmacology and is a distinguished professor of pharmacology at UCLA, where he has received 11 outstanding teacher awards voted by the medical students in the program. He is also a part-time professor at King Saud University in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. In addition to his Nobel Prize, he has received countless awards, including the 2008 Distinguished Scientist Award from the American Heart Association and the 2007 Medal of Merit from the International Academy of Cardiovascular Sciences. He is a former editor of the journal Nitric Oxide: Biology and Chemistry, sits on numerous scientific advisory boards, and travels the world speaking to professional and lay audiences about the incredible power of nitric oxide.
In addition to his professional pursuits, Dr. Ignarro serves as a board member of the nonprofit Operation USA. The organization helps communities alleviate the effects of disasters, disease and endemic poverty throughout the world by providing privately-funded relief, reconstruction and development aid.
